Marching Band / Percussion

Picture
All students that have an interest in performing with our percussion section can do so. Many students with no prior band class experience have become great performers in our percussion section in the past. Tryouts for positions are generally held in April/May before the end of the school year.

***2021 Spring Drumline Clinics***

Drumline clinics will be held weekly every Tuesday afternoon (3:00-4:30pm) beginning February 23. These sessions provide interested students with an opportunity to learn and develop proper playing techniques for the marching percussion instruments. Clinics are held in the THS Band Room, and no sign-up is necessary to attend. These clinics give potential new members a chance to play and practice with returning drumline members.
Attending these clinics is the best way to be successful at the drumline tryout.

***2021 Drumline Tryouts***
Drumline tryouts will be held on May 4th and 6th in the THS Band room from 3 - 4:30 pm. Students must attend both days for the audition. This is for any student wanting to play snare drum, bass drum, or tenor drums (quints). Students will be assessed on their playing technique, rhythmic timing, and overall comfort level on the demands of playing the drum.

The THS percussion section is divided into two sub-sections:
  • front ensemble (non-marching percussion)
  • drum line (marching percussion)

Both groups focus on playing musically while using appropriate instrumental techniques.

FRONT ENSEMBLE
Consists of instruments that perform on the front sideline of the field. These instruments are marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, electric keyboard/piano, bass guitar, and includes other types of percussion instruments as needed.

DRUM LINE
Consists of standard marching percussion instruments: snare drum, tenor drums (quints), bass drums, and crash cymbals. Students that wish to tryout for the drum line should be able to demonstrate basic drumming technique. Crash cymbals players are usually only assigned when the other drum line spots are filled.
