Color Guard Audition UPDATE (6/16/2020)
To make things easier on students trying out for color guard, the THS Band will be using an alternative audition method in place of the clinic/live audition, as originally planned. Students will submit a “virtual” audition of their tryout routine through a recorded video. This video will still be judged by separate judges using the same scoresheets, and the audition results will be announced shortly after the submission deadline.
Those who have signed up on the 2020 Color Guard Audition Preregistration Form will receive an email with the full audition routine in video format. This video will contain a demonstration of the routine, as well as a supplementary video on specific techniques used in the audition. This will help to assist auditionees who are new to the activity, and to break down specific details that would normally be taught during the audition clinics. An audio file to use for your audition will also be included.
For the audition, students will need to check out a flag to use in the audition video. There will be a $25.00 Audition Fee/Flag Rental Fee in order to take home a flag, and can be checked out at the Theodore High School Band Room any time during the following schedule:
6/18, Thur. 1 - 4 pm
6/19, Fri. 1 - 4 pm
6/20, Sat. 1 - 4 pm
6/22, Mon. 1 - 4 pm
6/23, Tues. 1 - 4 pm
6/24, Wed. 1 - 4 pm
6/25, Thur. 1 - 4 pm
Students are welcome to work alone, or in collaboration with others, while practicing the routine. A few details about your audition video…
DEADLINE TO SUBMIT AUDITION VIDEOS: SATURDAY, JUNE 27 BY THE END OF THE DAY.
Submit your video by email to [email protected], or upload a private video to YouTube and submit a link (or any similarly viable method)

Students are welcome to work alone, or in collaboration with others, while practicing the routine. A few details about your audition video…
- Make sure you have a way to record the video AND play the audition music together. You will need to perform the routine along with the music in order to properly synchronize your timing.
- Wear a PLAIN WHITE T-SHIRT and BLACK SHORTS/PANTS! This will help provide consistency among the auditionees.
- No speaking is necessary in the video, but you are welcome to vocalize (such as counting through phrases) as needed for your own performance.
- Treat it like a real performance! Judges like to see confidence in an audition. Posture, facial expression, and “flow” all contribute to your presence in the group. Consider those factors while you practice the routine.

2020 Percussion Tryout INFORMATION (!)
- All students who are interested in trying out (new or returning) need to fill out a 2020 Season Percussion Application Form. This will allow us to contact you with further information on how to proceed (link below)
- Since there are only a certain number of different spots in the percussion section, all applicants must be willing to accept whatever position they are granted at the end of the tryouts. Each player in the section has an important role, so all positions are needed to ensure the wellness and balance of the whole group.
- Front ensemble mallet spots are not limited, and can be expanded depending on the number of players/instruments available.
2020 Percussion (Drumline) Audition: Select two (2) of the warm-up exercises below to demonstrate in your audition video. For purposes of the audition, you will be using the snare part of the exercise in order to simplify your demonstrations (in these exercises, the parts are essentially the same for tenors and bass drums). Submit your video by email to [email protected], or upload a private YouTube video and submit the link (or any other similarly viable method).
